The Samanar Hills, also known as Samanar Malai or Melmalai, are a rocky stretch of hills located near the village of Keelakuyilkudi, about 10 kilometers west of Madurai city in Tamil Nadu. These hills are home to many Jain and Hindu monuments, dating back to between the 2nd century BCE and the 12th century CE.
The site has been declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India. The hills are known for their historical and cultural significance, with carvings and inscriptions that provide insight into the lives of Jain monks who lived there around 2000 years ago. The main attractions include the Settipodavu site, which features an image of Lord Mahavira, and the Pechipallam site, which has eight Jain sculptures including Bahubali, Mahavir, and Parsvanatha.
Visitors can explore the serene surroundings, climb the hills to see the ancient carvings, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. The site is open from sunrise to sunset, and there is no entrance fee.
