Samangad
Samangad is a hill fort located in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, situated at about 2,600 feet (790 meters) above sea level. The fort stands on an oval-shaped hilltop surrounded by an eight-foot-high wall that remains largely intact.
It boasts historical significance dating back to the seventh Rashtrakuta king Dantidurga and was later strengthened considerably by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1676. Known as one of the smallest but strongest Maratha forts, it played a vital role during resistances, including a notable uprising against British rule in 1844. The fort features rock-cut water cisterns, a temple dedicated to Goddess Ambabai, several platforms, and architectural elements like arches and bastions.
Presently, the fort is in ruins but remains a significant cultural and historical site in the Kolhapur region, offering panoramic views and a glimpse into the Maratha military architecture.
