Sangram Durg
Sangram Durg, also known as Chakan Fort, is a historic land fort situated in Chakan village near Pune, Maharashtra. Once sprawling over 65 acres, the fort now covers only about 5.5 acres due to the passage of time and repurposing of its stones.
It is renowned for the heroic defense led by the 70-year-old fortress commander Firangoji Narsala and his small force of 320 soldiers against a much larger Mughal army led by Shaista Khan in 1660. Despite being vastly outnumbered, Firangoji resisted the siege for 56 days, earning respect even from the Mughal general, who ultimately granted him and his men safe passage.
The fort’s remains include sturdy walls, a large cannon at the entrance, and a hidden tunnel used for strategic movements. Nearby is the Chakreshwar Temple with ancient stone carvings depicting the Varaha avatar of Lord Vishnu. Although much of the fort is dilapidated today, it remains a symbol of Maratha valor and determination and is accessible from Pune, making it a popular site for history enthusiasts and trekkers.
