Shivagiri, located in Vijayapura (formerly Bijapur) in Karnataka, is a renowned pilgrimage site known for its impressive 85-foot-tall (26 meters) statue of Lord Shiva.
This statue, installed by the T.K. Patil Banakatti Charitable Trust, is considered the second largest statue of Lord Shiva in India. The statue was meticulously crafted by sculptors from Shimoga over a period of more than 13 months, with the design provided by Bangalore-based architects.
The temple complex also features a small Shiva Linga placed beneath the statue and plans to inscribe "Shiva Charite" on the inner walls to help devotees learn mythological stories related to Lord Shiva. The site has gradually become a popular pilgrimage destination, especially on Maha Shivaratri, when it attracts over 150,000 devotees.
In addition to its religious significance, the Shivagiri temple is involved in various charitable activities, including the establishment of an old age home and plans for a free boarding school for meritorious students from economically and socially deprived backgrounds.
