Shri Marikamba Temple, located in Sirsi town of Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, is one of the most revered Shakti shrines in the region. Built in 1688, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Marikamba, a fierce form of Durga, and is affectionately known as “Doddamma,” meaning elder mother. The temple’s striking architecture features vibrant Kavi art murals and a seven-foot-tall wooden idol of the goddess seated on a tiger, believed to have been discovered in a pond near Hangal.
The temple’s sanctum and structures like the Chandrashala and Gopuram were added between 1850 and 1875, enhancing its grandeur. Every two years, the temple hosts the famous Marikamba Jathre, one of Karnataka’s largest festivals, drawing lakhs of devotees from across the state and beyond. During this nine-day celebration, the goddess is taken in a grand procession on a wooden chariot, accompanied by rituals, music, and cultural performances.
