Siddhagad
Siddhagad is a historic hill fort located in Thane district, Maharashtra, about 20 kilometers from Murbad. It stands at approximately 980 meters above sea level and features a distinctive prismatic or pyramid-like shape. The fort, originally built in the 9th century by the Shilahaar dynasty and later associated with the Maratha Empire, is known for its strategic location overseeing trade routes and for its natural beauty, including a notable waterfall.
Siddhagad is also significant in Indian history as the site where freedom fighters Veer Bhai Kotwal and Hiraji Patil were killed by British officers in 1943 during the independence movement. The fort has a plateau called Siddhamachi and a citadel on top, with several stone relics, caves, a Ganesh temple, and an intact main gate known as Maha Darwaja.
It offers panoramic views of the Western Ghats and neighboring forts and is a popular trekking destination, though the climb is challenging and best avoided during the monsoon due to steep slopes. The base village Narivali and Borwadi provide access routes, with Narivali offering better connectivity. A memorial for the freedom fighters is located on the trek route near Narivali. Siddhagad remains less explored, preserving much of its natural environment alongside its historical ruins.
