Sudha Gad Fort
Sudhagad Fort, also known as Bhorapgad, is a historic hill fort located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. The fort stands at an elevation of approximately 620 meters (2,030 feet) above sea level and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. It is one of the lesser-known but well-preserved forts in Maharashtra and has a rich history dating back to the 2nd century BCE.
The fort was originally called Bhorapgad after its presiding deity, Bhoraidevi. It was captured by the Bahamani Sultanate in 1436 and later came under the control of the Marathas in 1657. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj considered making Sudhagad the capital of his kingdom but eventually chose Raigad due to its central location.
The fort was under the control of the Peshwas and served as a significant stronghold during various historical periods.
Today, Sudhagad Fort is a popular trekking destination due to its relatively easy climb and the stunning vistas it offers. The trek to the fort starts at the base village of Thakurwadi and takes about 1-2 hours to reach the top.
The fort features several notable structures, including two temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, the well-maintained Bhoraidevi temple, two lakes, a large granary, and the impressive main gate, known as Maha Darwaja. The fort also has a Pantsachiv Wada, which serves as a shelter for trekkers.
