Talagad
Fort
Talagad
Talagad Fort is located approximately 18 km south of Roha town in Raigad district, Maharashtra, situated on a narrow spur at an altitude of 1000 feet. The fort features a narrow strip layout around 20 meters wide, fortified to keep watch over enemies and monitor the trade route from Maval to nearby sea ports.
Its early origins are uncertain, but it was controlled by the Adilshahi of Bijapur in the 16th century before being captured by Shivaji Maharaj in 1648. During an attack by Afzalkhan in 1659, the fort was briefly besieged by the Siddhis, but they withdrew after Shivaji defeated Afzalkhan. The Purandar Treaty saw Shivaji retain control of Talagad along with 11 other forts.
Later, the fort changed hands several times, including being captured by Bajirao Peshwa-I in 1735 and finally by the British in 1818. The fort has well-preserved fortifications, with rock-cut water cisterns, inscriptions, and an idol of Veer Maruti near its main gate. The site offers panoramic views including that of nearby Ghosalgad Fort, and is accessible by a relatively easy trek from the nearby village, making it a point of historical and trekking interest.
