Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Thane district, Maharashtra, about 90 kilometers northeast of Mumbai, within the foothills of the Western Ghats. Covering around 320 square kilometers, the sanctuary includes the catchment areas of Tansa, Vaitarna, and Modak Sagar lakes, which supply water to Mumbai and Thane.
The forest is primarily Southern moist deciduous with patches of evergreen, featuring tree species like teak, bamboo, khair, and haldina. It is home to diverse wildlife including leopards, sloth bears, barking deer, porcupines, and critically endangered vultures, as well as over 200 bird species such as forest owlets and crested serpent eagles. Popular spots within the sanctuary include Tansa Dam, Mahuli Fort, and Mahadeo Temple.
The area faces challenges like illegal logging, forest fires, and encroachment but remains a rich ecological zone ideal for wildlife watching and trekking.
