Thane Creek Wildlife Sanctuary

Thane Creek Wildlife Sanctuary in Thane, Maharashtra, is a significant coastal and marine ecosystem characterized by dense mangrove forests and brackish water, making it a vital habitat for numerous species. It covers around 16.9 square kilometers, including mangroves and water bodies, and is recognized as an Important Bird Area.

The sanctuary is famous for hosting large populations of flamingos, both Greater and Lesser species, alongside over 160 other bird species. It is part of the Central Asian Flyway for migratory birds, and in recent years, it has drawn attention for the spectacular gatherings of flamingos that attract bird enthusiasts. Besides birds, the area supports diverse wildlife including small mammals, and its mangroves serve as nurseries for fish and protect against floods.

Thane Creek was declared Maharashtra’s second marine sanctuary in 2015 and was designated a Ramsar wetland site in 2022, highlighting its environmental importance.

Visitors can explore it via boat safaris, enjoying views of the vivid pink flamingos and abundant wildlife in a serene natural setting near the urban sprawl of Mumbai and Thane. The best time to visit for birdwatching is between October and May, when migratory birds are most active.
