Thiruparankundram Hill
Thiruparankundram Hill, located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is a massive monolithic rock formation that rises to a height of 1,048 feet and has a circumference of over two miles. It is home to several ancient monuments, including Jain caves that date back to the 2nd century BCE, some of which are protected as national monuments.
The hill is considered sacred by Hindus and is known as Skandamalai, meaning "Hill of Skanda," referring to Lord Murugan, the god of war. One of the most significant landmarks on the hill is the Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple, which is one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan.
The temple is unique for its rock-cut architecture, carved directly into the granite hill, and features shrines dedicated to various deities, including Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Goddess Durga, and Lord Ganesha. According to Hindu mythology, this is the site where Lord Murugan married Devasena, the daughter of Indra, after his victory over the demon Surapadman.
