Thrissur Museum

The Archaeological Museum in Thrissur, Kerala, is a significant cultural and historical institution that offers a glimpse into the rich heritage of the region. Established in 1938, the museum was initially known as Sree Mulam Chithrasala or Picture Gallery and was located in the balcony of the Thrissur Town Hall.

In 1948, an archaeological gallery was added, and in 1975, the museum was relocated to its current premises in the Kollengode Palace, Chembukavu. The museum is situated within the Thrissur Zoo compound, making it easily accessible to visitors.

The museum's collection is diverse and extensive, featuring life-size statues of eminent personalities, models of ancient temples, and monuments. It also houses manuscripts written on dry palm leaves, known as olagrandhangal, which provide valuable insights into the region's history and culture.

One of the museum's most intriguing exhibits is its collection of megaliths, including earthen pots, urn burials, and various types of ancient pottery. These artifacts offer a fascinating look into the burial practices and daily life of the people who lived in the region during the Stone Age.

In addition to these, the museum boasts a remarkable collection of stone sculptures dating from the 10th to the 17th centuries, as well as bronze sculptures from the 12th to the 18th centuries. These sculptures reflect the artistic and cultural achievements of the region over several centuries.

The museum also features artifacts from the Indus Valley Civilization and Harappa, as well as items excavated from megalithic sites like beads and iron implements. These exhibits provide a comprehensive overview of the ancient civilizations that once thrived in the area.
