Tower of Silence

The Tower of Silence, located on Malabar Hill in Mumbai, Maharashtra, is a sacred site for the Zoroastrian community. Known as "Doongerwadi," this funerary tower is where the Zoroastrians perform the unique ritual of excarnation, a practice where the deceased are placed in the tower and exposed to scavenger birds. This method aligns with their belief in preserving the purity of the elements—earth, air, and water—by avoiding burial or cremation.

The Tower of Silence is surrounded by a 54-acre forest, providing a serene and secluded environment for these sacred rites. The structure itself is circular, with three rows designated for men, women, and children. The site also includes small structures called "bunglis," where prayers are recited before the body is carried to the tower by caretakers known as "khandias."

This centuries-old tradition reflects the Zoroastrian philosophy of harmony with nature. However, the dwindling vulture population has posed challenges to this practice, leading to adaptations in recent years. The Tower of Silence remains a significant cultural and spiritual landmark in Mumbai, offering insight into the rich heritage of the Zoroastrian community.
