Tral Wildlife Sanctuary
Tral Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, about 45 kilometers from Srinagar. Established in 2019, it covers an area of approximately 154 square kilometers and was formed by merging several wildlife conservation reserves and forest areas.
The sanctuary primarily aims to protect the critically endangered Hangul or Kashmir stag, which is one of the rarest deer species in India and is found here outside the Dachigam National Park. The terrain is hilly with forested mountains, streams, and rivers, featuring Himalayan moist temperate, sub-alpine, and alpine forests.
Besides Hangul, the sanctuary is home to species like Himalayan brown bears, musk deer, leopards, Himalayan black bears, and over 200 bird species. It serves as an important wildlife corridor connecting Dachigam and Overa-Aru wildlife sanctuaries, enhancing conservation efforts in the region. An Eco-Sensitive Zone surrounds the sanctuary to regulate human activities and protect its fragile ecosystem.
