Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary
Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Palghar district of Maharashtra near Vasai and Virar, is spread over approximately 85 square kilometers on a plateau about 665 meters above sea level.
Established in 2003, it acts as a vital corridor between Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary, supporting rich biodiversity including over 600 plant species, 250 bird species, 150 butterfly species, and 36 types of reptiles and amphibians. The sanctuary features a mix of dry deciduous, moist deciduous, and semi-evergreen forests.
Visitors often trek to the ancient Tungareshwar Mahadev Temple nestled within the sanctuary, enjoying the lush greenery, flowing streams, and occasional sightings of wildlife such as leopards, wild boars, barking deer, langurs, and various birds. The sanctuary offers a peaceful retreat near Mumbai, although it faces challenges like deforestation and human encroachment.
