The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi and is known for its serene surroundings, nestled amidst lush green paddy fields and large wetlands. The temple is currently managed by the Cochin Devaswom Board.
According to legend, the original name of Vallachira was Vallabha Chira, as the pond was dug by a devotee of Vishnu named Vallabha Chettiyar. This pond has been used for the Aarattu (holy bath) of Pisharikkal Bhagavathy and Aaraattupuzha Shasthaav during the Peruvanam temple festival.
The temple is believed to be more than 1400 years old.
