Vandan Fort, located in Satara district of Maharashtra, was built in the late 12th century by King Bhoj II of the Shilahara dynasty. It is one of the twin forts, Chandan and Vandan, that were captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj from the Adilshahi Sultanate in 1673 during his campaign in the region.
The fort is situated at an elevation of about 3,851 feet and features several gates, water cisterns, temples, and a dargah. It served as a stronghold for the Marathas until 1689 when the Mughals took control, but was recaptured by the Marathas in 1707 under Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj.
The fort’s architecture includes bastions, storage rooms, platforms, and ruins indicative of its military and administrative importance during the Maratha era. It remains a popular trekking destination offering panoramic views of the Sahyadri mountain range and insights into Maharashtra’s rich historical heritage.
