Varugad Fort, situated in Satara district of Maharashtra, stands about 3,000 feet above sea level in the Sahyadri mountain range. Believed to have been built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj around 1674, it was created to resist Mughal advances from the plains below.
The fort features a strong citadel with two massive bastions, a large turret, and a temple dedicated to Lord Bhairavnath, which continues to be worshipped by local villagers. Its architecture includes a gateway built in Gomukhi style, well-preserved stone ponds, and remains of sepoy houses.
Historically, the fort was guarded by a garrison of around 200 hereditary fort keepers and soldiers.
