Vasota Fort/ Vyaghragad
Vasota Fort, also known as Vyaghragad, is a historic hill fort located in the Satara district of Maharashtra, India. It was originally built in the 12th century, attributed to the Kolhapur Shilahara chief Bhoja II, and later came under the control of the Marathas.
The fort was captured and incorporated into the Maratha Empire by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1655, who renamed it Vyaghragad, meaning "Tiger Fort," due to its formidable natural defenses. Vasota served various purposes over time, including as a prison, and witnessed significant battles, notably defended by Tai Telin, the mistress of the fort's killedar, Pant Pratinidhi.
The fort was heavily bombarded by the British in 1818 during their conquest, which led to the destruction of many structures and the looting of valuables. Today, Vasota Fort stands amid dense forests near the Shivsagar Lake and the Koyna River, making it a popular destination for trekking, bird watching, and nature lovers. Its elevation of about 3,814 feet offers stunning views of the surrounding Western Ghats, adding to its historical and natural appeal.
