Vijai Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary

Vijai Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh, was established in 1990 and covers an area of about 262 hectares (2.62 square kilometers). It centers around the historic Vijai Sagar Lake, built in the 11th century by Vijay Pal Chandela of the Chandela dynasty.

The sanctuary is known for its rich birdlife, hosting around 200 species of local and migratory birds, including black-necked cranes, hornbills, coots, darters, painted storks, Brahmin ducks, and lesser whistling ducks. Besides birds, the sanctuary also supports local wildlife such as jackals, mongooses, and wildcats, and features flora like bamboo, palas, and khair trees.

Situated in the Vindhyachal hills, the sanctuary is especially lively from November to February when migratory birds arrive, making it a popular spot for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. It is accessible by road and rail via Mahoba, with nearby airports including Khajuraho and Lucknow. The sanctuary plays a crucial role in the conservation of avian species and offers a peaceful natural environment for visitors.
