Historical Landmark
Vishrambaug Wada
Vishrambaug Wada, also known as Vishrambaug Palace, is a historic mansion located in Sadashiv Peth, Pune. Built in 1811 by Peshwa Baji Rao II, the last Peshwa of the Maratha Empire, it served as his residence for eleven years. The mansion is a fine example of Maratha architecture, featuring intricately carved teak-wood pillars, a grand entrance, and a magnificent teak balcony where musicians once performed for the Peshwa.
Over the years, Vishrambaug Wada has witnessed several significant events. After the defeat of the Marathas in the Third Anglo-Maratha War, Baji Rao II was exiled by the British, and his wife Varanasibai continued to live in the mansion for a while before joining him.
The British later used the wada as a jail and later as the office of the Pune Municipal Corporation until 1959.
