Zeilad Wildlife Sanctuary
Zeilad Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Tamenglong district of Manipur near the Indo-Myanmar border, established in 1982 and covering an area of 21 square kilometers within the Barak River basin. The sanctuary is characterized by hilly terrain and houses semi-evergreen and wet hill forests.
It includes a group of seven lakes, with Zeilad Lake being the largest and most well-known. The sanctuary supports rich biodiversity, including diverse flora such as Michelia champaca and Mangifera indica, and fauna like tigers, leopards, hoolock gibbons, great Indian hornbills, barking deer, and flying squirrels. The lakes also sustain migratory birds, exotic fish, pythons, and tortoises, making it an ecologically significant area.
The sanctuary is valued for both its natural beauty and its cultural importance to local communities, but it also faces conservation challenges and concerns related to proposed oil exploration in the region.
