Ballarpur Fort, also known as Ballarshah Fort, is an ancient fort located in Ballarpur city, Chandrapur district, Maharashtra. It was founded in the 15th century by Gond King Khandkya Ballal Sah, who also established the city of Chandrapur.
The fort, built with large black stones, has a rectangular layout with two main gates set at right angles, and a smaller entrance by the Wardha River. It served as a strong defensive structure and royal residence for the Gond dynasty for many years.
The fort’s walls remain largely intact, though most inner buildings are in ruins. Inside, there are tunnels and underground chambers, with some tunnels rumored to connect to Chandrapur Fort. Significant historical events include the imprisonment and death of the last Gond king Nilkantha Sah here. The fort was repaired by Nana Saheb Bhosale in 1790 and later came under Maratha and British control. Today, the site is a historic landmark attracting visitors interested in Maharashtra’s rich cultural heritage.
