Birwadi Fort
Birwadi Fort is a hill fortress located near the village of Birwadi in Raigad district, Maharashtra, built in 1648 by Shivaji Maharaj shortly after his capture of Kalyan. The fort was strategically used to monitor the Revdanda creek and keep an eye on the activities of the Siddhis.
Situated about 1200 feet above sea level, the fort resembles a small hillock from a distance and features four corner bastions, a sturdy main gate, and several stone-cut water cisterns. Two cannons that originally stood on the fort have been moved to the Bhavani Mata temple at its base, which also serves as an overnight rest spot. Visitors can reach the fort via a trek starting from this temple, taking about 45 minutes to reach the summit, where they are rewarded with scenic views of rice fields and dense forest.
The fort’s small size allows for a quick exploration, and its historical significance lies in its role as a Maratha watchtower controlling regional waterways during Shivaji's reign.
