It was originally built as a wooden and bamboo structure in the late 17th century but was rebuilt in brick and stone in 1752 under the Ahom king Swargadeo Rajeswar Singha. The palace served as the central administrative building of the Ahom capital and epitomizes the distinctive architecture of the Ahom dynasty.
