The fort's name, "Janjira," is derived from the Arabic word "Jazeera," which means island. One of the most notable features of the fort is its 572 cannon emplacements, with the famous Kalal Bangdi cannon known for its impressive size and range.
Accessible only by boat, the fort's entrance, known as Dariya Darwaza, is hidden until one is almost upon it, signifying its strategic design. The fort also houses two freshwater tanks, significant architectural elements given its location surrounded by seawater.
