Sagargad
Sagargad Fort, located in Alibag taluka of Raigad district, Maharashtra, is a hill fort standing about 1,357 feet above sea level, offering commanding views of the Alibag region. The fort was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj from the Adilshah in 1660 and became one of the 23 forts handed over to the Mughals in the Treaty of Purandar in 1665, before being recaptured by Shivaji.
It played a crucial role in coastal defense before the establishment of other forts like Khanderi. Over the years, Sagargad changed hands multiple times, including control under the Siddis of Janjira, Marathas, and eventually the British.
The fort features a temple of Siddheshwar, a river, a waterfall called Dodhane, and a monastery where visitors can stay overnight. Though in ruins, the fort’s scenic beauty and historical significance make it a popular trekking and heritage site.
