Sudhagad
Sudhagad, also known as Bhorapgad, is an ancient hill fort located in Raigad district, Maharashtra, about 53 km west of Pune and 26 km south of Lonavla. It dates back to the 2nd century B.C. and was originally named after its presiding deity Bhoraidevi.
The fort was captured by the Bahamani Sultanate in 1436 and later taken over by the Marathas in 1657, who renamed it Sudhagad, meaning "the sweet one." Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj considered Sudhagad as a potential capital but ultimately chose Raigad for its central location. The fort features ruins of temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Bhoraidevi, two lakes, a granary, tombs, and multiple gates including the large Maha Darwaja.
It is surrounded by Sudhagad wildlife sanctuary and offers panoramic views of neighboring forts. Sudhagad is a popular trekking destination with routes from village Thakurwadi, and visitors can stay overnight at Pantsachiv Wada and Bhoraidevi temple.
