India to Build 100 Airports & 200 Helipads Under UDAN 2.0

In a major push to strengthen regional connectivity, the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved UDAN 2.0, an upgraded version of India's regional air connectivity scheme, with a massive ₹28,840 crore outlay.

The ambitious plan includes the development of 100 new airports and 200 helipads across the country, aimed at making air travel accessible to millions in smaller towns and remote regions.

Major Highlights of UDAN 2.0

  • ₹28,840 crore total investment
  • 100 new airports to be developed from unserved airstrips
  • 200 helipads planned in remote and hilly regions
  • Scheme period: 2026–27 to 2035–36
  • Focus on Tier-2, Tier-3 cities and remote areas
  • Boost to tourism, trade and emergency connectivity

The government plans to upgrade existing airstrips into functional airports while also improving last-mile connectivity. The 200 helipads will mainly serve mountainous, island, and aspirational districts, where traditional airport infrastructure is difficult to build.

The UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme was originally launched in 2016 to make air travel affordable for common citizens. The new UDAN 2.0 aims to further expand connectivity and reduce travel time between smaller cities. The scheme also includes financial support for airlines to operate on less profitable routes.

Experts believe this initiative will:

  • Boost tourism in remote areas
  • Improve business connectivity
  • Generate employment
  • Strengthen emergency healthcare access
  • Reduce congestion at major airports

The expansion aligns with India's long-term aviation goals, with plans to significantly increase the number of airports nationwide and improve regional accessibility. The move is expected to transform India's aviation landscape over the next decade.

With 100 airports and 200 helipads, UDAN 2.0 is being seen as one of India's biggest aviation expansion plans. The initiative aims to bring air travel within reach of every Indian, especially those living in smaller towns and remote regions.

India’s skies are about to get busier and more accessible than ever before.
