Details of the New Kolkata Metro Corridors

  1. Green Line Extension (Sealdah to Esplanade, 2.45 km): This extension will connect two of Kolkata’s busiest railway hubs, slashing the road travel time from up to 50 minutes to just 11 minutes by metro. The Green Line is also recognized as India's first underwater metro, making today's inauguration a historic milestone for the city and the country.
  2. Yellow Line (Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar, 6.77 km): This new route introduces a direct metro link to the Kolkata airport, taking only 30 minutes from Esplanade, and greatly easing the commute for air travelers and airport staff. The Prime Minister will personally flag off this metro service and take a ride from Jessore Road Metro Station to the airport and back.
  3. Orange Line Extension (Hemanta Mukhopadhyay to Beleghata, 4.4 km): Linking Science City, major hospitals, schools, and business centers, the Orange Line will now offer fast commutes between South and East Kolkata, connecting important residential and commercial hubs.

The newly inaugurated corridors span a total of 13.61 km, with 366 additional daily train services, boosting the metro’s passenger capacity to over 9 lakh commuters per day.

These expansions are expected to:

  • Drastically reduce travel time across major parts of Kolkata.
  • Improve direct airport connectivity, making citywide travel more convenient for frequent flyers.
  • Enhance links to Kolkata’s bustling IT corridor, commercial hubs, and residential areas.
  • Strengthen multimodal connectivity and reduce road congestion, giving commuters faster, more reliable travel options.

Experts project that these new metro sections will trigger increased demand and value for real estate along the new lines, especially around the airport and IT corridor. Improved urban mobility is expected to benefit lakhs of daily commuters, stimulating growth ahead of Kolkata’s festive Durga Puja season.
