Top 10 Indian States by Factory Numbers

India is home to a strong industrial sector, and its factories are spread across different states, each contributing to the nation’s economy by producing goods for both domestic use and international trade.

Based on factory numbers, here are the top 10 states leading industrial growth in the country.  

1. Tamil Nadu – 40,121 factories  

Tamil Nadu tops the list with over 40,000 factories, making it the largest industrial hub in India. The state is known for its automobile manufacturing, textile and garment industries, leather products, engineering goods, and electronics. Chennai, often called the "Detroit of India," plays a central role in the state’s industrial dominance.  

2. Gujarat – 33,311 factories  

With more than 33,000 factories, Gujarat ranks second. It has a strong base in petrochemicals, chemicals, textiles, and diamond polishing. The state also leads in ports and industrial corridors, offering excellent connectivity for domestic and international trade.  

3. Maharashtra – 26,539 factories  

Maharashtra, home to Mumbai and Pune, has around 26,500 factories. The state has a diverse industrial presence including pharmaceuticals, automobiles, textiles, IT, and entertainment. Mumbai is India’s financial capital, while Pune is a major automobile and technology hub.  

4. Uttar Pradesh – 22,141 factories  

Uttar Pradesh, with over 22,000 factories, is known for leather goods, textiles, glassware, and sugar industries. The state also has strong small and medium-scale industries, especially in Kanpur, Agra, and Moradabad, contributing significantly to exports.  

5. Andhra Pradesh – 16,011 factories  

Andhra Pradesh is home to more than 16,000 factories. The state is known for its industrial parks, ports, and agriculture-based industries like food processing. It is also growing in the areas of textiles, cement, and biotechnology.  

6. Karnataka – 14,984 factories  

Karnataka has close to 15,000 factories, led by Bengaluru’s prominence as India’s technology hub. Alongside IT, the state also has strong sectors in aerospace, machine tools, textiles, and electronics, making it one of India’s fastest-growing industrial bases.  

7. Telangana – 13,446 factories  

Telangana boasts about 13,400 factories, with Hyderabad being the center for pharmaceuticals, information technology, and biotechnology. The state is also emerging in electronics and defense manufacturing, supported by government-led industrial zones.  

8. Punjab – 13,166 factories  

Punjab, with over 13,000 factories, is recognized for its agricultural equipment, textile, and food processing industries. Ludhiana, often called the "Manchester of India," is famous for hosiery, garments, and bicycles, supporting both local and global supply chains.  

9. Rajasthan – 10,868 factories  

Rajasthan hosts more than 10,800 factories. The state is well-known for its cement production, textiles, and stone cutting industries. Industrial hubs like Jaipur and Alwar also contribute to automobile assembly, gems, and jewelry.  

10. Haryana – 10,389 factories  

With over 10,000 factories, Haryana rounds out the list. The state is a major automobile and engineering hub with cities like Gurugram and Faridabad leading in manufacturing. Its proximity to Delhi makes it an attractive investment destination for industries.
